KTRH (Nik Rajkovic) -- Republicans claim passing an English-only bill would compel the country and its immigrants to "embrace a common language once again" and be stronger for it.
Democrats have mocked the bill, even delivering their remarks in broken Spanish as a form of protest.
Since it was re-introduced by Iowa Rep. Steve King a year ago, the measure has gained 122 co-sponsors -- including Texas Congressman Louie Ghomert who feels anyone seeking citizenship in the U.S. should learn our language first
"There are liberals who think we'll let people learn in school in their own language," says the Tyler Republican. "By doing so, they are condemning these children into being manual laborers instead of someday owning the company."
The proposal also would requiring naturalization candidates be able to read and understand English versions of the Declaration on Independence and other key U.S. government documents.
