Brutal Syrian dictator Bashar Assad's glamorous former media adviser has said she 'did what any ambitious American girl would do' in helping out her birth country in its time of need.

Sheherazad 'Sherry' Jaafari, at the centre of a row this week after it emerged she was admitted to Columbia University with 'much help' from U.S. journalist Barbara Walters, said her three-month role in Assad's communications team had been 'exaggerated' and she had been made a 'scapegoat'.

Speaking for the first time since the scandal broke, she said she considered herself 'more a Westerner than a Syrian' and was never paid for her work, described as being at 'junior level'.
