This is hands-down the most creative film of the year.  Change that. In many years.  Perfect for the “Twilight” crowd,  this one has Abe Lincoln not only fighting to end slavery but fighting to stop vampires from taking over the country.

You really need to suspend  belief  at the door for this  one.  A whole lot does not make sense. How could people not  notice  vampires are murdering their neighbors?  And how do these vampires walk around in daylight , wearing  just sunglasses as protection. Wait a minute.  Who knew they had sunglasses in the 1860’s????  Who knew  vampires could  disappear one minute and then come back  from glittery dust  to strike out at their victims.  Who knew Mary Todd Lincoln was such a babe???  Or that sexy vampires in the 1860’s wore  skin-tight pants??!!  That’s not to mention the modern-day language that works its way into the banter.

Basically, this is a hell of an entertaining movie, whether you buy into it or  not.  It’s not all that bloody for a vampire  film but there are plenty of jumps and some decent use of 3-D. It has an awesome look-  evoking the way the Coen brothers shot “True Grit”  but using even more  golds and browns to give it an old school-old-book look.

The vampires are fast and furious.  There’s  tons of action.  Relative unknown Benjamin Walker (Meryl Streep’s son-in-law who looks like he can  be Liam Neeson’s son with a 6-foot-3 height)  takes  the President from  his teens  to his 50’s.  Dominick

Cooper plays Lincoln’s mentor and trainer  while Anthony Mackie plays his oldest and dearest  friend. Mary Elizabeth Winstead   plays the spunky , independent  Mary Todd.

One of the very cool things about this movie is it may inspire some delving into history. It sure could lead to some inspired   sequels: Nazi vampires anyone???

2-and-a-half stars
